Drum roll, please!!!!!!! The new Student/Community Liaison is…

September 17, 2012

I am extremely pleased to introduce to you all, the new Johns Hopkins University Student/Community Liaison, Mr. Jon Walter! Jon just retired after 22 and 1/2 years as a Baltimore City Police officer. He spent his entire career working in the Northern District (where JHU is located) and has worked in community relations for 17 of those years. Jon, along with Officer Doug Gibson and Officer Bill O’Donnell are my counterparts in the police department. In fact, these guys were my mentors and often my “go to” guys when I needed advice on how to handle something. When Dean Boswell mentioned Jon’s name as a possible candidate for the position, I felt a huge wave of relief. I know Jon, I know his back ground, his work ethic and his philosophy regarding community relations. Knowing that he is the one to not just take over, but to take the Student/Community Liaison position forward, means so much to me.

I’m also happy to announce that I’m coming back! Well, for a few weekends, anyway. Jon and I will be on patrol together this coming Thursday and Saturday, as well as the following Thursday and Friday. Jon will take over the reins by himself in October. Hmmm…. I wonder if Dean Boswell will let me do some twitter trivia before I go?? We’ll see! Oh…and I’ll be back, as an alum, for young alumni weekend Oct. 6th!!

I hope I get a chance to say good bye to you all these next couple of weekends and, more importantly, to introduce you to Jon. My cell pone number is the same, so if you want to text me to arrange an introduction to Jon, feel free.

See you soon!!!!!!

Big news a’coming!

September 16, 2012

So, I got 2 texts last night from students telling me they heard I was in town training the new guy. Well, that rumor was only 50% true. There is a new Student/Community Liaison (Woot!! Woot!!!), but I’m not coming down to train him….. until next weekend!!! And, the weekend after that!!!! I’m so excited! I’ve missed you little ones! Stay tuned here for more details on our new S/C Liaison.

March 28, 2012

I hope you all had a great break. I took advantage of the peace and quiet to go visit my family in Pennsylvania  a couple of times. Four different family dogs to play with, a lot of things to help my parents with around their house, good food, time with family and even a couple of drinks and a few games of pool with my niece. Perfect break! So, my batteries are recharged – let’s hit the ground running for spring semester!

A couple of things I’d like for you to keep in the back of your mind for later –

Move Out Trash – Beginning on May 7th and running until June 1st, I am again offering this FREE service to undergraduates living outside of university housing. You will have an amazing amount of trash when you get ready to move out this year and I’m going to help you get rid of it. It is EASYand it is FREE, but you must make an appointment via email. For more information, please check out my regular website.

JH-U-Turn 2012

“JH-U-Turn” is designed to help reduce waste and support a great cause by asking students to donate their end of school year items including clothing, furniture, books, electronics and household items.

All items donated will then get a second chance at being useful when they are sold at bargain basement prices at our JH-U-Turn sale on June 9th, 2012, 8am until done! The sale will be held in the Ralph S. O’Conner Recreation Center on campus and is open to the public. 50% of the proceeds of this sale go directly to the United Way of Central Maryland and 50% goes to the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, part of the university’s United Way campaign.  Last year, we raised $8,000 and I hope this year will be bigger and better.

Dorm residents can watch for the “ABF” donation boxes that will be placed in the dorms the week of move out. Off campus students, faculty and staff  can donate their items by making an appointment for pick up via emailing me OR make an appointment to drop items off at one of 6 ABF ReloCubes that will be placed in the community.

Volunteers are needed in every stage of JH-U-Turn, May – June. I’ll need help with the off campus donation pick ups, placing the donation boxes in the dorms, picking up the full donation boxes when we “storm the dorms” move out weekend and setting up and running the sale. Email me if you or your group is interested in volunteering. For more information, please check out my other website.

A little “house keeping” –

You know how much I want to promote all of the cool things that you do throughout the school year. I appreciate all the invites to Facebook events that I get and all of the requests that I get to publicize your events/causes/business adventures. I literally can not keep up with all of the requests! I am trying to create a calendar for this blog that I can use to share upcoming events. I will also try my darnedest to post about some of your requests using this blog. Please understand that I’m just passing information on. Just because it might end up on my blog, do not take that as some kind of endorsement specifically from me. We’ll see how this works. PLEASE feel free to email me with a) news of student run events/businesses/causes and b) feel free to let me know whether you want to see stuff like this on my blog or not.

Counting the days until SB12!

March 13, 2012

What? You thought only students get excited about spring break? Yeah, I know I’m not going anywhere exciting – no Cancun, no Europe, no mountain climbing. Just some extra time off and hopefully some time with my family. I have been so home sick lately.

Before you go, I’d like to play a familiar broken record for you – LOCK YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS! Leave some lights on. Take your valuables with you if you can. Five extra minutes of your time before you leave can save you so much heart ache when you get back!

One of the things about this school year so far that I would like to put behind us is the fighting. I don’t know what it is about this year, but there has been WAY too many punches thrown. Hopkins vs Hopkins, Hopkins vs USNA, Hopkins vs Towson, guys fighting guys, guys fighting girls…heck, I have been punched and pushed already this year! Look, fighting = suspension, expulsion, arrest, lawsuits, broken bones, etc. It has got to stop. Promise me that we can get through the rest of this year without further incidents.

Good luck on your exams and have a fun, safe, adventurous, lazy, crazy, happy and or relaxing spring break!

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

February 22, 2012

So, a big thank you to everyone that participated in my trash can contest. I decided that I can’t decide between the top two entries, so they both win!

Well done to both Patrick Wildes (your essay was the funniest) and Emily Ortega (your’s was the most heartfelt). I will personally be delivering your 3 new 32 gallon trash cans with attached lids and wheels to your houses this Thursday! Use them with pride!!!

Sorry to those of you who did not win, but there is some good news. The ACE Hardware store in Waverly has some great deals on new trashcans and lids. Ranging in price from under $10 per can on up to $60 per can (at that price, it better do laundry, too) you can take care of your trash woes while shopping locally.
